HPSC Jobs: HPSC Haryana Civil Services Examination Pattern
The earlier HPSC HCS exam pattern has been changed and now it will be conducted as per the Haryana Civil Services (Executive Branch) First Amendment Rules, 2020, which has come into force after Haryana government approved the amended in the Haryana Civil Services(Executive Branch) and Allied Services Rules 2008. From now onwards, the HPSC HCS exam will be conducted as per the new exam pattern of PCS prelims exam.
From now onwards, as per the new rules, the Civil Services Aptitude Test(CSAT) Paper will be qualifying only and the candidates need to secure only 33% marks to qualify in this test. The marks secured in CSAT will not be considered for the HCS prelims result. This step has been taken by the HPSC to bring the uniformity in the examination pattern of HPSC HCS exam with that of the UPSC IAS exam.
HPSC HCS exam is the most prestigious exam for various government jobs of the state of Haryana. The Haryana Civil Services (HCS) exam is conducted by the Haryana Public Service Commission (HPSC) every year to recruit suitable candidates for the HCS. The following is the new examination pattern for HPSC HCS:

HPSC HCS Exam Pattern – Stage 1: Prelims Examination (100 Marks)
The HPSC HCS exam is a three-stage examination with different examination pattern for each stage. The first stage of the HPSC HCS examination is the Preliminary Examination. This is a screening examination and marks secured in this examination is not carried considered for the final merit list. As per the Haryana Civil Services (Executive Branch) First Amendment Rules, 2020, the HCS Prelims result will be based totally on the marks secured in the General Studies Paper only. The Civil Services Aptitude Test(CSAT) paper will be of qualifying in nature. The qualifying marks for the CSAT paper is 33%.
The HCS prelims exam comprises two objective type papers. The prelims examination is conducted in designated exam centres in Haryana in offline mode.

HCS Prelims Examination and Negative Marking
The HCS prelims exam has a provision of negative marking for the wrong answer. 0.25 marks are deducted for each wrong answer given by the candidate. i.e. the credit for one right answer will be negated by four wrong answers.
HPSC HCS Exam Pattern – Stage 2: Main Exam (600 Marks)
The HCS main examination is the crucial stage of the whole exam process as the marks secured in this examination are considered for the final merit. The main examination comprises five papers which are descriptive essay type papers. Each paper is of a duration of three hours. The candidates need to select for two optional subjects from a list of 23 optional subjects for the main examination.
The total number of candidates admitted in the HCS main exam depends on the vacancies to be filled. It is normally 12 times the number of vacancies to be filled in a particular year.

HPSC HCS Exam Pattern – Stage 3: Personality Test (75 Marks)
Candidates scoring marks equal to or greater than the cut-off marks will be called for the personality test. The cut-off marks for the personality test depends upon the marks secured by the candidates and the number of vacancies to be filled. The ratio of candidates called for personality test and the number of vacancies is 3:1, i.e three candidates are called against one vacancy. Apart from the cut-off marks, the candidate will be called for the HCS interview only when the candidate attains 45% marks in the aggregate of all the main written question papers and 33% marks in the Hindi and English papers.
The HPSC HCS final selection result will be declared based on the cumulative marks secured in the main examination and the personality test.
